There were 24 teams entered for the 2022 SCPA Mixed Doubles at Burridge on Sunday, September 25th. A perfect number for taking 8 teams through to each of the Main, Plate and Spoon!
After a chilly start the morning leagues got underway in glorious sunshine.
After the 3 morning games, top seeds were Karen Lombard & Dave Plumhoff on a massive +37. Close behind in equal 2nd place on +33 were Kaylee Thatcher & Callum Lombard and Terri Cox & Bernie Miles from the host club, Cobbetts. Also on 3 wins were Ali & Dave Stubbs on +29 and Paula Fauvel & David Franco Cruz on +26. The other league winners were Angela Brooks & Martin Gordon with Christine Peat & Frank Charlesworth and Janet Dalton & Paul Bone (Cobbetts) also qualifying for the main competition.
Ali & Dave knocked-out the holders David & Paula 13-9 in a hard fought game but didn’t fare so well against the top-seeds Karen & Dave in the semi-final. In the other half of the draw, second seeds Kaylee & Callum also progressed to the final defeating Angela & Martin in the semi-finals.
Angela & Martin having beaten the other second seeds, Terri & Bernie, in the Last 8.
A very close and exciting final saw Karen & Dave get to 12 points first only to lose 13-12 after one bad end.
Christine & Frank took the Main Consolage prize beating David & Paula.
The Plate competition was won by one of the region’s juniors Francesca Evans-Jones who was playing with Marc Franco Llado, a junior not so long ago himself. They beat Roz Silvester & Dave Lucas in the final.
