Thirty teams from across the south, from Adur to Muscliff, Bedouins to Worthing, Sussex, Kent and a local pub, played in the 2021 Arundel Summer Open Doubles on Sunday 4th July. The torrential downpour early in the morning was a bit of a worry but we got away with just a little rain during playing times. The format was leagues in the morning and knockout with consolages in the afternoon and a 3-game snake for the Spoon section.
We had a wide range of experience across the teams, with several teams playing in their first all-day competition. There were a few surprises during the day – to mortification by some to unexpected elation for others!
The organisers had many lovely messages praising the day which makes it all worthwhile. After all, the bottom line of an open club event is enjoyment.
Particularly pleasing for someone like myself who is involved with junior play was that the whole event was won by a junior team who didn’t lose a game all day.
So, well done…
