We’re back!

We are pleased to announce that petanque competitions are starting to resume this autumn, while strictly complying with government COVID-19 restrictions and PE guidelines.

Southern’s IWD Women’s Doubles competition had to be cancelled just as lockdown started in March, but will now be played on 20th September at Worthing Petanque Club, limited to 14 teams. Hassi is looking forward to finally awarding the 2020 IWD Trophies, which have been ready and waiting for over six months!

A new SCPA 6-a-side inter-club competition, the Autumn Cup starts this week thanks to Dave Stubbs, who has arranged a new format that reduces the need to travel too far in the early stages. The final will take place on Saturday 31st October (venue tbc).

And finally, following detailed discussions with the UK Government, Petanque England is pleased to announce that they will be holding the 2020 National Titles competitions for Singles (Men and Women), Doubles (Men and Women) and Mixed Doubles. These will all take place at Gravesend Petanque Club on Saturday 19th September, Sunday 20th September and Sunday 11th October respectively. Gravesend has been assessed as COVID-secure and has special permission to hold a larger event run directly by PE, who are the National Governing Body for our sport.

There have already been some very successful competitions in the form of an Invitational Doubles at Southampton and Open Singles at Worthing last month, organised by Dave Plumhoff. Dave has led the way in showing that competitive play is possible within the current COVID-19 restrictions and that with sensible planning it can be a very enjoyable day out even with less participants than we are used to. Well done to The Hoff for taking the initiative and running some great competitions following on from the success of his remote (online) shooting competitions during lockdown.

The SCPA Committee hope that you are enjoying getting back to playing petanque and will support these competitions if you are able to do so.
