Clymping Petanque Club is the newest club in the Southern Region, located just a few miles south of Arundel between Bognor Regis and Worthing.
Saturday 4th January saw the official opening of the new club, which started with a speech by club chairman Keith Wannell before newly-elected SCPA President Steve Lombard had the honour of cutting the ribbon to open the new terrains for their first ever open competition. Also present were Petanque England’s Membership Secretary Ray Keemer-Richards and Clubs Administrator Jim Marstin; SCPA committee-members Kath, Hassi, Paul and Frank; a couple of local councillors, and representatives of the Clymping Community Center. An impressive turnout and showing great support for this new club.
A full-capacity 48 people played the triples melee and at least another dozen came along to watch. With eight Pistes, this was the maximum number that could be accommodated so it was pretty busy. Everyone seemed to have a good time and it was very encouraging for Clymping to have so many very experienced players trying out the new terrain for the first time. The weather was kind to us with crisp dry January day and a little sunshine from time-to-time.
The overall winner of the three-game melee was Clymping’s own Mike Davies, who was playing in his first ever competition! Best of 2 wins was Gina Wilkins and best of 1 win was Chris Peat. Friendliest Player, was Greta Roberts.
Thank you to Clymping Petanque Club for your hospitality and hard work in getting your new club up-and-running and to all who came along to support them. We look forward to Clymping becoming a regular venue in the SCPA calendar!
