Southampton City Triples

It was hot, humid and rather sweaty as 18 teams attended the Southampton City Open Triples on Sunday 30th June. This was the first triples for 2 years at Southampton after last year’s unfortunate cancellation.

Teams came from neighbouring regions Sussex and Isle of Wight to partake in the event.

The format was of usual ilk: four morning leagues (three with 4 teams and one with 6), followed by a three-section knock out. League winners and next best 4 teams into the Main, the following 8 battled for the Plate and the remaining 4 were in the Spoon.

Surprisingly, only one team finished with a perfect 3 wins in the morning – Cobbetts Goodens: Dave Stubbs, Richard Greeves and Steve Brickell. And they were duly placed as No.1 seeds, while the Southern Juniors continued to impress by also making it into the main – a great achievement for the young Southerners.

The knockouts were a tiring proposition as the sun and it’s searing heat gripped the players as the day went on. Fluids were taken a-plenty. The Juniors were unable to make it through to the Semi Finals, losing unfortunately to a very good Isle of Wight team.

In the semi-finals, The Hurricanes (David Plumhoff, Andy Walker and Dawn Latimer) comfortably defeated the Isle of Wight trio of Chris Bailey, Emma Stockbridge and Josh Tombleson, 13-3, while Cobbetts Goodens also won 13-3 in the other semi-final against the Parley City threesome of Tom Wilson, Shirley and Cigdem Laity.

After going the whole day undefeated, Cobbetts Goodens just couldn’t hold on for that final victory and were defeated 13-6 against a Dawn Latimer inspired Hurricanes. The winning shot being an expertly taken “spot carreaux” at 10m by Andy Walker.

Well done to David Plumhoff (Salmon Leap), Andy Walker and Dawn Latimer (both Southsea) for their success and prize money.

A well run and attended competition by Southampton City. With thanks to Graham Galton for his excellent hosting and Peter Galton for setting the day up.
